This
section is about the basics of the doghouse, joining, interaction and leaving.
This historical route is where you just filling a form to place an advert on the site where a picture is attached that you have sent me. This was the only method back in 1994 to put up an advert.
The content sent via joining is used to create the adverts. The adverts are publications which are published manually. That is you send in the form, I check it, send you back an email to say that I got it (in a few languages) and then press a button and it will publish that section of the site.
As part of the publication process it starts a profile template for you. What it does not do is create an account for you as I do not know what password you want or indeed if you want anything more than just an advert.
This is where you create an account, you choose your logon in. If you have joining first AND the advert was published you can use your email address to fill out this form and connect your profile. The info provided in the profile would have come from your joining advert. If you did not send one in then you have to create one from scratch. This would mean you need an account, to create and edit your profile, to upload pictures and so on.
Basically it is needed to prove who you are and for you to take control of your presence on the doghouse and get your messages.
So once you have created an account, you can logon and you can create and edit your profile.
Your profile would be something like mine, http://thedoghouse.org/topdog1 if you have not created a profile yet it will create one for you ready for you to change. On the side of the profile text will be Hot Edit buttons which mean you can quickly just edit those blocks of text. There will be another link on the far left an "Edit my Profile" which will after you have logged on that you to your profile manager. So when you do this from any profile the initial assumption is that you are a visitor. You have to logon to do stuff, such as send them a message, to change your profile or to get a profile like this. This is all about Profiles so this is a good place to deal with things that relate to a profile including searches for more like this. Is this your thing or not, is this person on your wavelength or not.
You will see at the top of these pages a green bar with room for a userid
and password. Enter your details and press enter. It will update with current
info about your account and show the pictures.
The site is not organised as a list so you have to enter a section and explore
it. However
Articles can be submitted by logged on members where they have a web
based HTML editor and they can develop an article without needing knowledge
of web page development. They can even use MS Word and paste in content and
get it cleaned up.
Security is applied on page entry so once you have logged on you will need
to a page refresh or visit (enter) another page. On page entry it will determine
from the userid logged on if they have paid to view the pictures or not and
how they are allowed to interact with the site - they are known versa just being
a search engine or web copier.
Once entered it will change and then update the page. This uses what has become
to be known as AJAX but really just uses JavaScript to drive DHTML. What this
means is that one page (the green bit) is talking to the host page (the black
bit). This means that your browser needs to have this enabled and comply to
'standards'. The snag with 'standards compliant' that you use the lowest common
denominator in features so that it will work on a Mac and a PC or do you push
the browser to the limits?
Its like choosing between VHS and Betamax - where as DVD will play in
any country on any system. For example not many Banks, Stock Exchanges or Oil
Production systems use Macs where as a lot of Video and Visual Designers use
Macs over PCs - horses for courses.
This site assumes you are using MSIE on a windows platform as 98% of doghouse visitors are using this, the site is also tested using FireFox and a large part of it works in that but not the MSIE optimised features - the are known problems with safari user. The next generation of the doghouse will rebuild itself depending on your browser capability. An example of this is when you access outlook.thedoghouse.org on the web via your mobile phone, your PDA or laptop.
This site is mean to be as accessible to dog kind as possible. I could lock it down completely and only be interested in those with a visa card. But how many young slaves are still living at home with the folks, possibly still a student and till exploring who they are? Do they have Visa cards, or even bank accounts?
So locking out the pictures 'protects' those under age, those who did got here by mistake - eg looked up Dog Training and did not notice the SM prefix. Short of tattooing a notice to their heads some people need the bleeding obvious explained OR they do not understand English.
By way of contrast if you upgrade your account, you will get to see all the pictures, it will imply you are 'old enough'. This will also allow you other freedoms on the site that guest users do not get.
